Overview
There are several locations in Vrbnik where you can discover more about its cultural and historical heritage, but there is one address you mustn’t miss – therefore, visit the Vitezic Family Library, the Memorial Printing House of Blaž Baromić and Dragutin Parčić, and the Ethno Collection of Neda Trinajstić, and discover more about the history of this charming place.
The Vitezić Library includes a valuable legacy of brothers Dinko and Ivan Josip Vitezić. It was established in 1898 and open to the public in 1910. Although it once had many more copies, the library is still an oasis for the research work of historians, Croatists, ethnologists, but also of all the history enthusiasts as well as curious visitors.
According to the latest report, the library has about 3877 titles, and some of the books have been digitized. What will attract your attention is surely the Atlas of Johann David Köhler from the 18th century, which is considered as one of the only two preserved copies in the world, hence its exceptional value.
After visiting the Vitezić Family Library and admiring the value of its books, it is time to learn something about book printing itself. Vrbnik is associated with the names of renowned Glagolitic printers, and the two of them, who must be mentioned, are the Glagolitic priest Blaž Baromić, as well as Dragutin Parčić.
The work of Dragutin Parčić is greatly appreciated in the field of linguistics, cartography, astronomy and photography. His publishing of the last Glagolitic Missal also speaks of his importance.
The memorial printing house itself was opened in 2003, and there you can discover more about the history of book printing, as well as the printing process itself and the tools required. The memorial printing house contains a replica of the printing, typographic press, which was built according to the designs of professor Frane Paro.
The next step in discovering Vrbnik's history and culture is a visit to the Ethno Collection of Neda Trinajstić, which contains pieces of furniture, cookware, photographs and other items that portray the everyday life of ancient times.
In addition, the exhibition includes male and female folk costumes in both summer and winter versions. Take a peek into the ethnographic collection that will take you back to the past and awaken your curiosity for exploring Vrbnik further.
