The Bear Refuge in Kuterevo, near Otočac, has been in operation since 2002. It is a shelter for bears orphans who remained without their mother while still being too small for independent living. Each bear has its own name and character.
The bear sanctuary was founded with the idea of protecting the bear habitat, educating and promoting a sustainable lifestyle. Volunteers from all over the world can take part in the work of bear refuge, they can guide you through the bear sanctuary in English - upon arrival you should contact the Volunteer Center.
The bear refuge can be visited from 9:00 am until the dark falls, and we recommend a visit early morning or in the late afternoon. A donation is expected. Parking is available at your disposal. Within the refuge there is a compost toilet, and 300 meters from the refuge there is a small catering facility.
