Skrad - next to a magical canyon and waterfall

Skrad is is a small village located along the historic Louisiana Road, in the heart of Gorski kotar. Skrad otherwise shares the fate of other settlements in Gorski Kotar, which were abandoned in the 16th century because of the Turkish invasion and later resettled in the 17th century when historical circumstances allowed.

Lush forests and rolling hills surround Skrad. It is best known for its magical canyon Vražji prolaz (Devil's Pass Canyon) and a waterfall, which are perfect for a family excursion. Skrad offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities in its breathtaking nature.

Green vortex & Devil's Pass Canyon

Skrad has been known as a health resort since the 19th century because of its mild subalpine climate. It is known for Zeleni vir (Green vortex), a 70 m high waterfall. There is the beautiful canyon Vražji prolaz (Devil's Pass Canyon) and the cave Muževa hišica (Husband's cave).

Munjara - hydroelectric power plant in Zeleni vir

In Zeleni vir, the second oldest hydroelectric power plant in Croatia, "Munjara," was built in 1921. The power plant still operates today and provides electricity to many surrounding villages.

This hydroelectric power plant runs on two aggregates with a combined 1.7 MW of power, producing an average of 7.39 GWh of electricity per year.

The idea of a hydroelectric power plant came back in 1989 to the owner of a local sawmill, Josip Lončarić.

He tirelessly promoted electricity and even distributed free light bulbs to locals who were somewhat skeptical of the new energy.
