The Risnjak National park is located in Gorski kotar and it was founded in 1953. Today, it covers a total area of 6350 m. The Risnjak National park extends from the peak Risnjak at an altitude of 1528 m to the Kupa Valley at 290 m above sea level. The source of the river Kupa and the richness of its forests is the fundamental natural phenomenon of this national park.
The stunning National Park Risnjak is a protected area of pristine nature and wildlife. National park Risnjak is home to 3 big European beasts - bears, lynxes and wolves. Risnjak is also home to numerous plant species, as many as 1148, making it one of the most biodiverse areas in Croatia.
National Park Risnjak was named after the lynx, a mysterious cat species and a rare and silent inhabitant of the mountains.
Croatia's least researched animal, the lynx, is one of the most endangered mammals in the land, given its specially protected classification.
The European lynx is a medium-sized wild cat native to Europe. It has a thick fur coat that ranges in color from yellowish-brown to grayish-brown, with black spots and stripes. The average size of an adult lynx is between 90 and 130 cm in length, with a tail length of 10 to 25 cm. Males are typically larger than females, weighing between 18 and 30 kg, while females weigh between 8 and 15 kg.
Estimates suggest there are between 40 and 60 lynxes living in Croatia, though their numbers are sadly decreasing.
The source of the river Kupa will enchant you with its turquoise-blue color. The Kupa Valley is also known as the "Wonderful Butterfly Valley".
Located in Gorski kotar, this valley is home to various butterflies and other wildlife. The area is also known for its stunning views of lush forests and untouched nature.
