Mrkopalj - for nature lovers and active holiday fans

Mrkopalj is a small mountain town in Gorski kotar, at an altitude of 824 m. 

Mrkopalj was first mentioned in the 15th century as the estate of the counts Frankopan.

Did you know that near Mrkopalj, there is also Begovo Razdolje - a settlement at the highest altitude in Croatia (1078 meters above sea level) with a ski slope and a ski lift?

Impressive nature and the past of Mrkopalj

The breathtaking nature in which Mrkopalj is immersed leaves you breathless and fills you with awe.

For example, you can visit the Bijele and Samara rocks, experience the magic of karst, and go on a real geological journey through time.

And near Mrkoplje, you will also find impressive traces of our recent history, such as the famous Matić poljana.

The White and Samarske Rocks

The White and Samarske Rocks near Mrkopalj are a strict nature reserve and home to some of the most stunning natural scenery in the region.

The rocks are made up of limestone and dolomite formations that have been shaped by centuries of erosion. They rise from the surrounding forested landscape and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Matić poljana with 26 monoliths

Matić poljana, with 26 monuments - rocks reminiscent of 26 partisans who lost their lives here in a snowstorm is also very impressive.

The monuments are made from limestone monoliths and are arranged in a row, with each rock representing one of the fallen soldiers. 

On that freezing night in February 1944, the partisans were on a 52 km-long march. 26 partisans froze and 150 partisans survived, mostly with permanent consequences from frostbite.

Matić Poljana is located at 1030 m above sea level. It is a 3 km long grass plateau, about 300 m wide.

Today, Matić Poljana is a well-known picnic spot full of medicinal plants and wildflowers.
