By intertwining the story of the oak tree (ancient Slavic name "dub") and the region’s rich maritime heritage, the DUBoak Interpretation Center takes you on a journey through the fascinating history of Dubašnica – the western part of Krk Island, known for its vast forests and shipbuilding tradition.
The holm oak once dominated Krk’s forests and played a crucial role in the island’s economy. Its durable wood was used for boat building and was exported to Venice, leaving a lasting impact on the region’s maritime history.

Through an interactive exhibition, guided walks, and workshops, you’ll discover the deep connection between Dubašnica’s forests and its traditional boats:

Dubašnica – A Land Rooted in Forests and the Sea
Today, Dubašnica is a historic region on Krk Island, named after its rich oak forests. Its history dates back to the Liburnians, who built their famous stitched ships from these very oaks.
In the Middle Ages, Dubašnica was renowned for its fertile lands, olive oil, and wine, but it was timber trade that shaped its maritime legacy. The demand for wood led to the construction of large ships, expansion of ports, and the arrival of the first steamships, which marked the beginning of tourism on Krk.
Thanks to its abundant forests, Dubašnica became a center for boat building, where locals crafted vessels such as pasara and guc. Many farmers were also fishermen, demonstrating the inseparable link between land and sea, a connection that DUBoak brings to life.
