The Mystery of Biserujka Cave
Located near the village of Rudine, Biserujka Cave has been known for centuries. The first written record dates back to 1834, when it was mentioned in court documents as a hiding place for smugglers. According to legend, a hidden treasure lies within the cave, though it has never been found – hence the name Biserujka (biser = pearl).
Although relatively small (110 meters long and up to 15 meters deep), the cave boasts impressive natural decorations. Inside, you’ll marvel at the stunning calcite formations, columns, and stalactites, all illuminated to create an enchanting atmosphere.
A Unique Underground Ecosystem
Biserujka Cave is home to a rich variety of underground life, including six endemic species. Among them are:
- Alpioniscus christiani – an underground crustacean,
- Anophthalmus maderi maderi – an underground ground beetle,
- Neobisium insulare – an underground pseudoscorpion.
In the cave’s lower channel, the remains of a prehistoric cave bear were discovered, offering a glimpse into the region’s ancient history.
A Cool Escape from the Summer Heat
Constant temperature: around 15°C
Relative humidity: 95%
If you visit Biserujka during the summer, stepping into the cave provides a refreshing break from the heat. The cave features three main halls – The Cypress Hall, The Hall with Bridges, and The Great Hall – as well as several smaller underground chambers waiting to be explored.
Explore the Village of Rudine & the Stunning Slivanjska Cove
After visiting the cave, take some time to explore Rudine, a tiny village with just five permanent residents. The village will charm you with its unique karst landscape and traditional stone houses, many of which are now picturesque ruins.
Just below Rudine, you’ll find Slivanjska Cove, accessible via an educational hiking trail. Along the route, you’ll encounter five information boards, providing insights into the fascinating geology and biodiversity of the surrounding landscape.
If you love hidden beaches, Slivanjska is a perfect place to relax and take a swim in crystal-clear waters.
